Grouping text in Canva helps to apply changes to multiple texts at once. This could help save time and increase efficiency.

Today in this article I will be showing you step by step process of how to group text in Canva.

Follow the below steps to group text in Canva:

1. Open Canva

Go to the Canva website.

If you already have a Canva account, log in using your credentials. If you don’t have an account, you can sign up for free.

2. Create a Blank Canvas Or Open Your Existing Design

Once you log in or sign in, you will be directed to the Canva homepage.

Click on the ‘Create A Design’ button from the top right corner of your screen to create a blank canvas.

Note: If you already have an existing design you can open that up and continue from Step 3

A whole new set of premade canvas types will appear in front of you like a logo, presentation, resume, etc.

Scroll down and click on the canvas type that you want or use the above search bar to search for the same.

3. Choose a Template

After clicking on a design type, you will be directed to a blank canvas.

Click on the ‘Design’ button from the left sidebar to get access to Canva pre-made templates. Scroll through the available templates or use the above search box to search for the template you need.

Once you find the template that you were looking for, click on it to add it to your canvas.

4. Select The Text

When you have a template in place, it’s time to make changes to the already existing text.

You can select multiple text elements by using these two methods:

  1. While pressing the “Shift” key on your keyword, click on each text element you want to select. The selected text elements will get a purple bounding box around them.
  2. While pressing the left button of your mouse, drag your cursor over the text elements that you want to select. As a result of which a purple color selection box will appear around those text elements.

5. Group The Text

Once you select all the text elements from your template, a tooltip will appear in front of you.

Either you can click on the ‘Group’ button in front of you or can use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl/Cmnd + G for grouping the elements together.

Note: Ctrl’ button for Windows and the ‘Cmnd’ button for Mac users

Both of these methods will group the text elements together which means you can now use the top toolbar to make changes to all the selected text together like font size, font style, text color, effects etc.

How to Ungroup Text in Canva

Go to the Canva homepage and scroll down for the subheading ‘Recent Designs’.

Under the ‘Recent Designs’ subheading, click on the design with the grouped text elements that you want to ungroup.

As a result of which, your previous design will appear in front of you with an editor bar on the left-hand side.

Click on a single text element that you want to ungroup, all the elements that are grouped with that selected element will get highlighted with a bounding box with a few options at the top.

Either you can directly click on ‘Ungroup’ from there or can use the same keyboard shortcut Ctrl/Cmnd + G

After ungrouping, you can select, move, resize, or edit each text element individually.

How do I combine letters in Canva?

You can use the same concept of grouping to combine different letters in Canva.
Just type all your letters in separate text boxes and select them all and then group them together.

Can I Apply Effects To A Group Of Texts?

Yes, you can apply effects to a group of texts. To do this, first, select and group all the text boxes together. Now click on any of the text, then click on the ‘Effect’ button in the top toolbar.

A new menu will appear on the left-hand side. Choose an effect from the given options like a shadow, lift, hollow, outline, etc, and then click on it to apply it to a group of text

Why Can’t I Group Elements on Canva?

If you are not able to group elements on Canva that means one or some of your elements are locked.

And in order to group them you have to first unlock them. FIrst figure out which elements are locked, you can do that by clicking on them one by one, if the element is locked then a lock icon will appear on the top.

Just click on that lock icon to unlock that element.
