Now click on the design type of your liking to get redirected to the blank canvas.

2. Underline Your Text

After opening your design in the Canva editor, we can proceed with underlining your text in Canva.

There are two ways to underline the text in Canva, let’s take a look at each of them:

a) Underline Button

Click on the text that you want to underline.

Note: I will click on the ‘Cosmetic Sale’ text element for demonstration purposes.

After selecting your desired text element, click on the ‘Underline’ button or ‘U’ icon from the top toolbar.

Click On The Text Element

As you click on the ‘Underline’ button, the text in front of you will get underlined.

You can also use the keyboard shortcut for underling your text in Canva, Cmd/Ctrl + U.

  • Note: It is the easiest method for underlining a text in Canva. But it does not allow you to change the size or color of the ‘Underline’.

b) Line Element

The ‘Underline’ button was introduced very late in Canva. Before that people used to use the ‘Line’ element for underlining the text.

Although people nowadays also use the ‘Line’ element to underline the text because it gives you full control over the ‘Underline’.

This means that you can easily alter the size, color, thickness, or style of the underline.

To add a line to your design, click on the ‘Elements’ button from the left sidebar. Now an elements menu will open in front of you.

search for a line

Search for your ‘Line’ element from the top search bar. From the search results, click on a ‘Line’ to add it to your design.

Now a thin line will appear on your design, which will be barely visible while underling the text.

So, click on the ‘Line Style’ button from the top toolbar and then drag the ‘Line Weight’ slider towards the right-hand side to increase the thickness of the line.

drag the line weight slider

Release the slider when you achieve your desired thickness.

After increasing the weight of the line, you can also round the corners of your line by enabling the ‘Rounded End Points’ button.

Once you click on the ‘Rounded End Points’ button, it will turn purple in color and the endpoints of your line will get rounded.

Choose A Line Style

But what if you want to change the whole appearance of the line?

Then click on the thumbnail of any ‘Line Style’ that you like the most to add to your design.

For example, let’s click on the ‘Dotted Line’ and see how it looks on your design.

Quite creative, isn’t it?

Resize The Line

After customizing the line according to your requirements, start with resizing the line to match the length of the text.

Drag the endpoints of the line inwards or outwards to decrease or increase the size of the line to match the length of your text.

Position Your Line

After resizing the line, drag and position it below your text. It will give your text an underlined effect.

  • Note: If you want to change the color of the line, then click on the ‘Line Color’ button from the top toolbar. Now from the color menu, click on the color of your liking to change the existing color of your line.
