Here are the steps that you can follow to make text vertical in Canva:

1. Open Recent Design

Go to the Canva website and then log in or sign up to get access to the Canva homepage.

Look for the ‘Recent Design’ section on the Canva homepage. This section contains all the designs on which you have worked in the past.

open a recent design

Click on the design whose text you want to make vertical and it will open in the Canva editor.

  • Note: To create a new design, click on the ‘Create a Design’ button from the top right corner of the Canva homepage and then click on your desired design type.

2. Make Your Text Vertical

After opening up your design in the Canva editor, we can start by making the text vertical.

However, there are three easy ways to make your text vertical in Canva:

a) Condense Your Text

Click on the text box that you want to make vertical and a boundary box will appear around it indicating that it is selected.

For example, I will click on the ‘This Weekend’ text box for demonstration purposes.

click on the text
  • Note: To add a text element to your design, click on the ‘Text’ button from the left sidebar and then on a default text style or font combination to start typing your text.

After selecting the text element, you will notice a handle on the right edge of the text box.

Drag that handle towards the left-hand side to condense the text.

As you drag the handle you will notice the text condensing vertically (refer to the screenshot below).

keep dragging the handle

Release the handle when all the text has condensed on one side.

In this way, you can create a vertical text in Canva.

If you want to change the ‘Font Size’ of the vertical text, click on it. Then click on the ‘Font Size’ button from the top toolbar and a new menu with different font sizes will open in front of you.

Click on your desired font size from the new menu to change the existing font size of the text.

After changing the ‘Font Size’ of the vertical text, drag and position it on your design.

b) Rotate The Text

The other method for making the text vertical In Canva is to rotate the text at 90 degrees.

To do that, click on the text element that you want to make vertical and a boundary box will appear around it with few options.

click on the text element again

You will notice a ‘Rotate’ handle on the bottom of the boundary box. This handle helps you to rotate the text element in any direction you want.

So, while pressing the left button of your mouse, rotate your text vertically.

As you drag the handle, you will notice the text element rotating in front of you. Release the left button of your mouse when your text is rotated to 90 degrees.

Now your text element will get vertical in front of you.

If you want to change the font style of the vertical text, then click on the ‘Font Style’ button from the top toolbar.

A new menu with various font styles will open on the left-hand side, either search for your desired font style from the top search bar or scroll through the available options.

Once you find a ‘Font Style’ that you like, click on it to change the existing font style of the selected text.

c) Position Each Alphabet Vertically

Both above methods do not allow you to customize each alphabet separately.

If you wish to customize each alphabet later on after making them vertical, then follow this step.

Click on the ‘Text’ button from the left sidebar and then on the ‘Add a Heading’ button. Once you have a text box on your design, type the first alphabet of the word that you want to create.

For example, I want to create ‘Shop Now’, so I will type my first alphabet ‘S’ on the text box.

Type Your First Alphabet

Now again click on the ‘Text’ button and then on the ‘Add a Heading’ button. But this time, type the second alphabet of the word.

Type Second Alphabet

If you want to change the existing color of your second alphabet, click on the ‘Text Color’ button from the top toolbar.

Either click on a ‘Default Color’ or use the ‘Color Picker Slider’ to create a new one.

For example, I think the ‘Brown’ color will look really great on the text. So, I will click on the ‘Brown’ color from the colors panel on the left-hand side.

change the color of 2nd alphabet

After changing the color of the text, click on the ‘Effects’ button from the top toolbar and again click on the ‘Splice’ effect from the new menu.

add splice effect to 2nd alphabet

And Then drag and position it below your first alphabet.

Drag And Position Your Alphabet

Note: In the same way, keep adding texts from the ‘Text’ section, customize it from the top toolbar, and drag it in its respective place until you get all the alphabets of the word on your design (refer to the screenshot below).

create all alphabets

Now while pressing the ‘Shift’ key on your keyboard, keep clicking on all alphabets to add them to the selection.

Then click on the ‘Position’ button from the top toolbar and a new menu will open on the left-hand side.

Select All Alphabets

Click on the ‘Vertically’ button from the new menu to evenly space your selected text elements vertically.

Now all your alphabets will get vertically positioned.
