But watermarking your visual content is so important these days to prevent unauthorized use or theft of your hard work!

The good news is, Canva makes it super simple to add customized watermarks and protect your designs.

In this quick tutorial, I’ll show you step-by-step how to create a watermark in canva and overlay them onto any Canva creation in just minutes.

No more worrying about people snagging your pins, prints, or social posts!

How To Create a Watermark In Canva

So usually, people prefer to put their own logos or signatures as watermarks so I’ll be using a logo template to demonstrate you the steps.

You can use the same technique to create any type of watermark you want.

Follow the below steps to create a watermark in Canva with just a few clicks:

1. Open Canva

Go to the Canva website.

If you already have a Canva account, click on the “Log In” button and enter your login credentials. If you don’t have an account, click on the “Sign Up” button to create a free account.

After logging in or signing in, you will be directed to the Canva dashboard.

2. Choose a Logo Template

Once you are logged in, Search for ‘Logo’ from the search box located in the middle of the screen. Now you will be able to see a variety of pre-made logo templates on Canva.

You can browse through all the templates and choose the one which matches your requirement by clicking on it.

This will open a new window in front of you, click on the purple ‘Customize This Template’ button to proceed further.

This will open your template in the editor where you can customize the template.

Note: If you already have your logo created then just create a blank template inside canva and upload your logo file to the canvas and continue from step 5.

3. Remove Unwanted Elements From The Logo (Optional)

A logo template inside usually contains a variety of elements like images, texts, graphics, etc and sometimes you don’t need all of them.

In that case, you can remove the elements that you don’t want by clicking on the element.

A purple box will appear on the boundary of that element indicating that it is selected.

Then click on the ‘Backspace’ or ‘Delete’ button on your keyboard to remove the image from your logo design.

4. Customize Your Design

Now, it’s time to customize the logo watermark to match the company’s branding.

Double-click on the text element in the logo template that you want to update and then enter your company name, your name, your signature or whatever you want.

To customize the design further, you have to click on the text element you wish to change, and a toolbar will appear at the top of the screen.

From the toolbar, you can change the font style, font size, position, color, and other formatting options. Keep experimenting with different fonts and styles until you get satisfied with the results.

5. Adjust The Transparency

Have you ever thought why are all the watermarks transparent?

This is because if you don’t make the watermark transparent, it will cover up your design and destroy it’s look and feel.

To make your logo design transparent, you have to select all the elements of your design.

To do that, you have to keep pressing the ‘Shift’ button on your keyboard and then click on the other elements of the design that you want to include in the selection.

Each time you click an element while pressing the “Shift” button, it will be added to the selection.

Once you have multiple elements selected, Click on the ‘More’ button or the ‘Three Dot’ icon from the top toolbar. And then Further click on the ‘Transparency Button’ or ‘Chessboard pattern’ Icon.

Now slide the transparency slider to the left side to decrease the transparency of your logo. As a result of which your logo will become more transparent.

Note: I will suggest you decrease the transparency slider to 50-60 number.

6. Download Your Design

To save your watermark, click on the ‘Share’ button from the top toolbar. This will open a new sidebar on the right side, from there click on the ‘Download’ button.

A new menu will appear on the right side with various download settings. Choose PNG from the file type (as it is the only format that supports transparent background) and make sure your check the “Transparent Background” option.

Once, you select the format and quality of the design as per your needs, click on the ‘Download’ button at the end.

Note: ‘Transparent Background’ option is only available for canva pro users.
