We’ve all been there – you take a great photo then notice something in the background you want to remove.

Or maybe you found an amazing stock photo on the Canva stock library but a little element inside the image is ruining the feel.

Whatever the case, I know how annoying it is when you spot something you want to be erased from your beautiful Canva images.

You want your photos to look polished and pristine!

Well, I’ve got good news.

In this quick guide, I’ll walk you through the two simple ways how to erase in canva- using the background remover tool and using the canva magic eraser.

How To Erase In Canva

Follow the below steps to learn how to erase the parts of the picture in Canva:

1. Open Canva Website

Search for the Canva website.

And then look for the ‘Log In’ or ‘Sign In’ button in the top right corner of the screen.

If you have an existing Canva account, click on the ‘Log In’ button.

Or if you are new to Canva and don’t have an account, click on the ‘Sign Up’ button.

After logging in or signing up on Canva, you’ll be directed to your Canva homepage.

2. Open Design Type

After getting directed to the Canva homepage, it is time to open a design type for your project.

To open a design type, click on the ‘Create a Design’ button from the top right corner of the screen.

And a new menu with various design types will appear in front of you, search for your desired design type from the top search bar.

Note: You can erase the unwanted parts of the picture in every design type. So, for this tutorial, I will be searching for the Banner (landscape) design type.

Now Canva will show you various design types related to the one which you searched for earlier. Click on the design type which you search for.

As a result of which you will be further directed to a blank canvas.

3. Add an Image On Your Design

After getting directed to the blank canvas, you have to add an image on your design that you want to erase.

If that photo is saved on your computer, then you have to upload it on Canva by clicking on the ‘Uploads’ button from the left sidebar.

Now the uploads menu will open, click on the ‘Upload Files’ button to browse through your computer’s files and select the image you want to upload.

Then click on the ‘Open’ button from the right bottom corner to start the uploading process.

Once the image gets uploaded on Canva, it will show under your upload library. Click on the image to add it to your design.

If you want to erase the parts of a Canva stock photo, then click on the ‘Apps’ button from the left sidebar and scroll down to click on the ‘Photos’ button.

You can now browse through Canva’s wide collection of photos. Scroll through the images or use the top search bar to find your specific photo (for example, beach, travel, food, etc).

Once you find a photo that you want to erase the parts of, click on it to add it to your design.

4. Erasing an Image

Now with the new AI tools released by Canva, there are 2 ways to erase unwanted objects from Canva.

One is to by erasing the background and then manually erase the unwanted stuff and the other is to use the newly launched Canva Magic Eraser.

Using Background Remover

Once you have your desired photo on your design, click on the photo ones, and as a result which top toolbar will appear.

Click on the ‘Edit Photo’ button from the top toolbar to open the editing menu on the left side.

Now click on the ‘Background Remover’ or ‘BG Remover’ tool to remove the background of the image.

Now Canva will process your image for a few seconds and then only the cutout of the image will appear on your canvas.

If you are not satisfied with the background removed and still want to erase some part of the image cutout.

Then click on the ‘BG Remover’ again and it will further open a menu with ‘Erase’ and ‘Restore’ tools.

Click on the ‘Erase’ tool and then while pressing the left button of the mouse, slide your cursor onto the unwanted part of the image and it will get invisible.

For Example, I will be erasing the hat of the woman which she holds in your hands.

If while erasing the unwanted part, you think that the brush size is too small or big, then use the ‘Brush Size’ slider below these tools to resize the brush according to your need.

Move the brush size slider towards the right side to increase the size of the brush or slide it towards the left side to decrease the size of the brush.

If while erasing the unnecessary part of the image, by mistake you erase the required part of the image then click on the ‘Restore’ tool.

Note: The restore tool is basically used to reverse the effects of the erasing tool.

Using Canva Magic Eraser

In order to use Canva magic eraser, select the image that you want to erase from.

Now click on “Edit Photo” from the top toolbar and then click on “Magic Eraser” from the available options.

Now brush over the part of the image that you want to remove, eg. here I want to remove the coffee cup so I have brushed over it.

Now wait for canva to process the removal.

After 10-15 seconds, your item will be removed successfully.

Now if you don’t like the results, you can click on the button “Reset Erasings” to revert the changes.

6. Download Your Design

Once you feel happy after looking at the cutout image in front of you, you can proceed to download your design on your desktop.

From the top right corner of the screen, click on the ‘Share’ button and then on the ‘Download’ button.

Now a new menu of download settings will appear in front of you. Set the file type to ‘PNG’ and tick the ‘Transparent Background’ box before clicking on the ‘Download’ button at the last.

Note: the Transparent Background option is only available to Canva Pro users.

Can You Erase Part Of An Image In Canva For Free?

No, you cannot erase a part of an image in Canva for free. All the tools such as ‘BG Remover’, ‘Erase’, ‘Restore’, and ‘Magic Eraser’ are only available to Canva Pro Users.
If you have a Canva free account and do not want to upgrade it to Canva Pro then you can choose to look for any other image editing platform.

Where Is The Erase Button On Canva?

To get access to the erase button on Canva, click on the ‘Edit Photo’ button from the top toolbar and then click on the ‘BG Remover’ tool from the new menu on the left-hand side.
