Designing an ebook doesn’t require you to be a graphic designer anymore. By following these steps and using powerful, user-friendly tools, you can produce a professional result quickly.

This guide focuses on a streamlined workflow perfect for beginners, covering content generation, organization, visuals, design, and final download.

Step 1: Generating Your Ebook Content with ChatGPT

First, use ChatGPT to write your ebook’s content. Define your topic, ensuring it’s relevant to your audience. Ask ChatGPT for a professional outline or table of contents for your topic.

Refine the topic based on popular search queries if needed and settle on a specific angle.

Then, instruct it section by section to write the content based on that outline, ensuring you get engaging text for your entire book.

Step 2: Organizing and Proofreading Your Content

Gather all the text generated by ChatGPT and organize it in a word processor like Google Docs according to your outline (Title, TOC, Chapters, etc.) (See example at 2:25).

Crucially, proofread the content meticulously. Use AI tools like Grammarly (See 2:56) or QuillBot (See 3:01) to check for grammatical errors, punctuation, and awkward phrasing.

Paste your text into the tool or upload the document and make the necessary corrections for a polished final draft (See 3:14).

Step 3: Sourcing High-Quality Images for Free

Visuals make your ebook more engaging. Find high-quality, free images suitable for commercial use on sites like Pexels.com.

Search Pexels using keywords related to your ebook’s content (e.g., “healthy lifestyle”).

Download several relevant and appealing images to use throughout your eBook.

If you have a Canva Pro subscription, you can find high-quality stock images inside Canva image library as well.

Free users can also get selected stock images but they are usually not enough.

Step 4: Choosing the Right Ebook Template in Canva

Head to Canva and search for “ebook” templates.

Important: Choose a template that explicitly shows it has multiple pre-designed pages.

This saves you from designing internal pages from scratch.

Select a multi-page template that fits your style and click “Customize this template”

Step 5: Designing Your Ebook Cover

Customize the first page of your chosen Canva template to create the cover. Replace the placeholder title with your ebook’s title and the author name with yours.

You can also change the image if you want.

Go to “Uploads”, upload the cover image you downloaded from Pexels to Canva, and drag it into place.

My template doesn’t have a cover image on the cover page so I’ll continue as it is.

Work through the remaining template pages (TOC, Introduction, Chapters, Author page, Conclusion).

On each page, replace the placeholder text with your corresponding content copied from Google Docs.

Replace placeholder images with your uploaded Pexels images, using frames or manual positioning.

If needed, duplicate existing page layouts to add more chapters, ensuring visual consistency.

Step 7: Making Your Table of Contents Clickable

Enhance usability by making your TOC interactive. On the TOC page in Canva (See 12:10), highlight the text for a chapter title.

Click the three dots (‘More’) in the toolbar, then the Link icon.

In the pop-up, under “Pages in this document” select the thumbnail of the page where that chapter begins.

Click “Done”. Repeat for all TOC entries, linking them to their respective pages.

Step 8: Adding Page Numbers (Optional but Recommended)

Check if your template includes page numbers.

If not, you can add them automatically by clicking on the Quick Actions button from the bottom left corner and then selecting “Page NUmbers”.

This will automatically add page numbers on all the pages.

Step 9: Downloading Your Professional Ebook

With your design complete, click the Share button in Canva. Select Download.

Choose the File type PDF Print for the best quality for an ebook format.

Ensure “All pages” is selected. Click the final Download button to save the finished ebook PDF to your computer.
